Santa Clara, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team wrapped up the Cal Winter Invite Sunday as it challenged the host team No. 7 Cal in singles and No. 60 Fresno State in doubles. The Broncos now look ahead to hosting their first home match against UC Santa Cruz on the Mission Campus this Sat., Jan. 26 at 12:00 p.m.

The highlight of the third and final day of the round robin event in Berkeley for the Broncos was No. 26 Katie Le taking down No. 9 Anett Schutting of Cal in singles. Le blocked out her opponent in two sets 6-3, 6-1 and claim the upset and her second win over a ranked player this season. This is the biggest triumph ever in program history for a Santa Clara tennis player to date. The second singles point for Santa Clara came from senior Jessica Agra in the No. 6 position. After dropping the first set, she battled through yet another three set match yesterday to top Cessi Estlander of Cal by a score of 3-6, 7-6(7), 1-0(8).

"I was really happy with our competitiveness in singles against the No. 7 team in the nation and host of the tournament, Cal," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "Katie's win over the No. 9 singles player is the biggest victory ever for a Santa Clara tennis player in our program's history. It's an amazing win that will propel not only her confidence but the entire team's as well."

"Today's win, along with how the team played this past weekend with all the tough three sets they pulled through, was a great way to start off the season," said Le. "We've been working hard and preparing for matches like this all fall so it's really encouraging to see the results. Even though I lost my first singles match to No. 64 Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's, I'm very pleased with my overall performance and the way I competed today against No. 9 Anett Schutting of Cal."

In the doubles competition, Santa Clara came up empty-handed against the three duos from Fresno State. All of the three Bronco teams were close but could not put the match away in the final games. Cabell will continue to emphasize achieving match fitness in practice this week before the UC Santa Cruz match-up while keeping his team healthy.

"In addition to what I saw today, we need to sharpen our doubles tactics. We feel good about our level of play against Fresno State, but we understand that there are many areas of improvement that we can work on for league," said Cabell. "All in all, this early season tournament has showed us that we can be competitive against any ranked team and that's where we need to be—right along side of them."
