Against the Cardinal (12-3; 5-1 Pac-12) whom are 8-1 on their home courts, the Broncos (7-8; 3-1 WCC) came up short on the doubles side and had to rely on their individual singles matches in effort to convert the match victory. Last season, Santa Clara lost to Sanford 7-0.

The highlight of the Wednesday's events was when No. 28 Katie Le took down the defending 2012 NCAA Singles and Doubles Champion No. 20 Nicole Gibbs. Le was the last Bronco off the courts as she battled through a long and tough three-set match. The Milpitas, Calif. native dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7(1), but was able to swing the momentum her way in the final two sets and took the match 6-7(1), 6-3, 1-0(8). This is Le's second time defeating a top 20-ranked opponent this season.

"Stanford is one of the best teams in the country and they are going to contest for a NCAA championship. I thought we played well in spots and we are very proud of Katie beating the defending 2012 NCAA champion in singles. That's a huge win for her and our program," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "Hopefully, we can take what we did well and move forward and get better." 

Santa Clara's second point came from freshman Chelby Cooke. At the No. 4 position, Cooke topped her first ranked opponent of the 2012-13 season. The Bakersfield, Calif. native was leading No. 93 Stacey Tan in the first set, 3-2, after Tan had to retire. Cooke's dual singles record improves to an impressive 9-3 for the freshman's first collegiate season.

#53 San Diego and #40 Saint Mary's

Santa Clara hosts two West Coast Conference teams for its last weekend at home this season in the Degheri Tennis Center. 

The Broncos host No. 53 San Diego on Sat., April 6 at 11:00 a.m. In addition to the match, a Campus Kid's and Tennis Play Day will be put on by the women's tennis team before their match for kids of all levels in grades 1-8. Click here for more information and to register your children today!

On Sun., April 7, the Broncos host Bay Area rival No. 40 Saint Mary's at 12:00 p.m. A Senior Day ceremony will take place before the match and will honor the Broncos' four seniors, Jessica Agra, Kelly Lamble, Maggie McGeorge, and Alex Zaniewski.

"This weekend is probably the biggest weekend of the year for us just in terms of playing two conference opponents who usually finish right around where we finish in the top half of the conference," said Cabell. "San Diego and Saint Mary's are both very good but also very beatable. We are excited to play them at home and hoping that our four seniors can go out on a really high note against these two teams."

The San Diego Toreros split their last two matches, knocking off BYU 4-3 and losing to cross-town rival San Diego State 4-3. They hold a similar record as the Broncos at 8-8 and 3-1 in the WCC. Santa Clara has never beat The Toreros, holding a 0-12 record against them. Last season in San Deigo, Calif., they lost to USD 7-0.

Saint Mary's (10-7, 5-0 WCC) recently has tallied victories over No. 26 Oklahoma, then-No. 51 San Diego and BYU, riding a three-match winning streak entering this weekend. The Gael's only ranked player, No. 17 Jenny Jullien, is the highest ranked player in the WCC—No. 28 Katie Le is the second highest. Le and Jullien last faced each other in January at the Cal Winter Invitational, with Jullien scoring the 7-5, 6-3 win in her first match of the 2013 season.
