SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara men's cross country hit a milestone mark early in the 2018 season on Monday. The Broncos are ranked 11th in the NCAA West Region by USTFCCCA, one spot higher than their previous best mark of 12 in 2017. SCU was unranked in the season's first two polls.
The team took third place of eight groups in the 8-kilometer race at the season-opening USF Invitational on Sept. 1, besting meet host San Francisco and San José State. The Dons were ranked eighth and the Spartans were ranked 11th in the west region preseason poll. Santa Clara was led by Zach Litoff and raced without top returner Jack Davidson in that meet.
Davidson returned to the lineup to help Santa Clara finish in fourth place of six teams at last weekend's BYU Autumn Classic. The Broncos finished only three points shy of Weber State – which entered the race ranked 10th in the Mountain Region.
In total, the Broncos have reached a new program record in the regional rankings three times in the last two seasons. Santa Clara's next race is the San Francisco State Invitational on Friday.
