Cross Country to Battle the West at NCAA Regional Championship Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara cross country continues championship season on Friday morning at the NCAA West Regional Championship Meet. The women's 6-kilometer race begins at 11 a.m. and the men's 10-kilometer race starts at noon at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, California.

The top two women's and men's teams earn a spot in the NCAA National Championship Meet. Individuals from non-automatic qualifying teams can earn a spot in the national title race if they are among the first four finishers in the top 25.

WOMEN'S 6K - 11 A.M.

SCU Entries: Claire Cocales, Hannah Covington, Jamie Ferris, Sarah King, Emma McCurry, Noelani Obermeyer, Lucie Semone

Emma McCurry had led the team in three of its five major events this season. Noelani Obermeyer and Sarah King were the other Bronco leaders and King's performance came at the last event, the West Coast Conference Championships.

Oregon and Boise State enter as the top ranked teams in the region (USTFCCCA), and check in at second and third, respectively, in the national poll.

Associate Head Coach Pete Cushman: "I think the team is really dialed in and excited to put an exclamation point on the fall; we have had a good season thus far. We feel like we ran good races at WCCs, but not necessarily great races, and if we can put together a great day instead of just a good day at regionals it could equate to something like an eight- or nine-team place swing. The key to a great day is a tight spread one through five, and being disciplined but relentless with our efforts through the second and third mile."

MEN'S 10K - NOON

SCU Entries: Aaron Brumbaugh, Ben Davidson, Jack Davidson, Jorge Estrella, Brennan Lagerstrom, Zach Litoff, Xander Olivero

Santa Clara's men are ranked 12^th the region by USTFCCCA. Zach Litoff has led the Broncos in three of five events this season, while Jack Davidson led the team in both races at altitude, including the WCC Championships.

Portland and Stanford are the top ranked teams in the region and are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in the national poll.

Head Coach Felipe Montoro: "We are not focused on any particular finish for the team, we just want to have our best effort on the day and beat as many teams as we can. To accomplish this, we have prepared well to manage the size of the field and the extra two kilometers. Our guys are focused on maximizing their individual efforts, while also trying to run together whenever possible and having a small spread from one through five."

LAST TIME OUT

Santa Clara turned in solid results at the 2018 West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27. Jack Davidson took 24^th and led the men to a fifth-place finish in the 8-kilometer race with a 24:41.2 while King took 33^rd and paced the women to a seventh-place finish with a 22:37.2 at East Bay Golf Course in Provo, Utah.

The men placed fifth in 2017 and have produced their best back-to-back years of racing at conference since taking third place in 2010 and fourth place in 2011. The women improved upon an eighth-place finish in 2016 and a ninth-place finish in 2017.
