HAYWARD, Calif. — Santa Clara track & field turned in strong performances across the board Saturday at the East Bay Invitational. Brennan Lagerstrom set the program's 800-meter record with a field-best 1:53.17 and Janie Nabholz outraced 54 other runners at 1,500 meters with a 4:39.41.

Lagerstrom broke the previous program-best mark of 1:53.39, set by Robbie Reid at the 2010 Brutus Hamilton Invitational.

Spencer Fischer captured second with a 1:53.47 and Christian Raslowsky took third with a 1:54.16 to make it a Santa Clara sweep in the 800. Fischer's time lands him at third on the program's top 10 list while Raslowsky's is good for fifth.

Lagerstrom's program record is the fourth set by the men's team this season. Jack Davidson has broken the team's best marks at 1,500 meters (Cal Opener) and 5,000 meters (Mike Fanelli Track Classic) while Zach Litoff set the 3,000-meter steeplechase record (Stanford Invitational).

Nabholz won the women's 1,500-meter race by crossing the finish line in 4:39.41. Later in the day, she doubled back to capture third place at 800 meters on the strength of a 2:20.45. Carolina Avelar, Claire Cocales and Emma McCurry won their 1,500-meter sections to give the Broncos a victory in all sections they competed in at that distance.

Connor Lehl led a trio of men's runners at 1,500 meters by clocking a 4:02.05 to take fourth place. Santa Clara posted top-four finishes in four of five events overall.

FROM THE COACHES

Head coach Felipe Montoro (Men): "I am really pleased with how all six guys competed today. Connor Lehl has dealt with some major physical setbacks in the last year, so to be able to run a PR bodes well for the future. The 800 guys executed a smart race plan and we swept the event, led by Brennan Lagerstrom's new school record."

Associate head coach Pete Cushman (Women): "We had a great day. Janie Nabholz continues to get better and is a very good competitor. Our main objectives were to be aggressive in the second half of races, race to win, and be good teammates by racing for and with each other. We accomplished all of those things and we are running our best all season at just the right time."
