DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara baseball team dropped its three-game series against the UC Davis Aggies Sunday afternoon after the Aggies captured a 3-2 win at Dobbins Stadium. In what was a tight pitcher's duel, UC Davis overcame a one-run deficit with two in the seventh for the deciding runs.
The Broncos (6-7) return home to Stephen Schott Stadium for four games this coming week, first hosting the Utah Utes in a 1 p.m. contest Monday afternoon, then hosting the Cal Poly Mustangs in a three-game series over the weekend. Friday's game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch, with Saturday and Sunday's contests set to start at 1 p.m.
Carl Bacon and Gabe Alcantar each went 2-for-4 Sunday, with Bacon driving in a run and Alcantar smacking a double. Ryan Conan also added an RBI double.
Justin Kuehn, despite a strong showing in which he allowed only three runs on five hits in six and two-third innings, took the loss for the Broncos.
SCU got off to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first. With two outs, Alcantar doubled to left and was driven in by Bacon's single. Following Evan LeBlanc's walk, Conan drove a double down the left-field line to score Bacon.
Kuehn cruised through the first six innings, despite an unearned run in the third inning by UC Davis which made it a 2-1 game. But in the seventh, Evan Hudson led things off with a single, and after being sacrificed to second, got to third on Justin Schafer's infield hit.
With runners on the corners and one out, the defense came up big as Alcantar threw Hudson out at the plate on a Ryan Royster grounder. Yet after Kuehn's balk moved the runners up to second and third, Michael Jacobellis delivered what ended up being the decisive blow of the game, doubling to center to drive Schafer and Royster in with the tying and go-ahead runs.
Davis' Scott Chew held the Broncos to only two hits over the final three innings to claim the win in relief of Jeff Reekers, who gave up two runs on six hits over the first six innings.
Jacobellis had two RBIs for the Aggies while Hudson went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the team.
