SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The cold and grey conditions over Stephen Schott Stadium on Sunday afternoon foretold a menacing tale for the Santa Clara baseball team, as the Broncos managed only three hits and were shutout for the first time all season, as the Cal Poly Mustangs prevailed 8-0 to capture the weekend series.
Santa Clara (8-9) will jump right back into action this Tuesday night, Feb. 27, hosting the Fresno State Bulldogs in a 6 p.m. contest.
Carl Bacon, Ryan Conan, and Matt Long each had one of SCU's three hits on the day, with Conan hitting his fourth double of the season. On the hill, starter Justin Kuehn suffered his third loss of the season, giving up seven runs in four inning.
Four SCU relievers threw well, allowing only one unearned run over the final five innings.
Cal Poly jumped ahead 3-0 in the second, as Bryan Kepner led off the inning with an opposite-field blast to left for the first run of the game. After a pair of base hits and a failed sacrifice, the Mustangs loaded the bases with Adam Melker's walk, and Pat Pezat's base hit through the right side drove in a pair to take the early three-run lead.
The Mustangs busted the game open in the fourth, as Adam Buschini's single and Melker's second walk started off the fourth, and after Logan Schafer was hit by a pitch to load the bases three batters later, Grant Desme crushed Kuehn's first offering over the fence in right-center for a two-out grand slam.
Cal Poly starter Thomas Eager handled things on the hill, going the distance while striking out nine Broncos.
