SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball program received an accolade from the Collegiate Baseball newspaper as the Broncos' 2006 recruiting class was named on of the Top-40 classes in the nation, and tops among West Coast Conference schools. The members of this class, who are currently in their first year on the Mission Campus, will look this spring to help lead the squad to its first WCC title since 1997.

"Ultimately it is what you do in practice and on the field that determines how successful you will be," said Santa Clara head coach Mark O'Brien. "But it's nice to see that there are talented players in our program that give us a good foundation to work with."

O'Brien went on to praise assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Zirelli for the work he put into signing the members of the 2006 recruiting class, "Mike has done an outstanding job of recognizing some of the finest players in the high school and junior college ranks."

The class of 2006 includes eight players from California, one from Arizona and one from Washington.

Nathan Garcia (Bellarmine College Prep), Patrick Glenn (Amador Valley HS), Matthew Hiserman (Capistrano Valley HS), Steven Kalush (Aragon HS), Jon Karcich (Serra HS), Geoffrey Klein (Ocean View HS), Tommy Medica (Bellarmine College Prep), Alex Rivers (Tokay HS) and Dylan Slocum (Paloma Valley HS) make up the California contingent. Tayler Thomas (Salpointe Catholic HS) hails from Arizona and Jeremy Zink (Garfield HS) will come to the Mission Campus from the state of Washington.

Karcich, a shortstop/closer for the Padres, was also named to the San Jose Mercury News' All-Central Coast Section First Team along with fellow 2006 signees Garcia and Medica of San Jose's Bellarmine College Prep. The Broncos, with Garcia and Karcich, signed two Bay Area players of the year, as Garcia was named CCS Baseball Player of the Year by the Mercury News and Karcich by the San Francisco Chronicle.

South Carolina, Miami (FL), and Florida fielded the top three recruiting classes according to the newspaper, while the Broncos were ranked 28th in the nation. Pepperdine was the only other WCC school to have a spot in the Top 40, checking in at No. 33.
