Baseball America 2007 Freshman All-America Team

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University freshman catcher Tommy Medica was named to the Baseball America Freshman All-America Second Team Friday, marking his second All-America selection following the 2007 season. Earlier this month, he was also named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team by Collegiate Baseball.

"Tommy had an amazing freshman year for us in 2007, we are thrilled for him to be named a freshman All-American once more," said Santa Clara head coach Mark O'Brien. "He is an incredible talent both defensively and offensively, and we look forward to his continued success in the coming years here at Santa Clara."

Medica, a San Jose native and former Bellarmine College Prep star, captured the West Coast Conference batting title as a freshman with a .373 average and was named to both the All-WCC First Team and All-Freshman Team. He managed to hammer out 60 hits on the year, including nine doubles, four triples, and a home run, despite missing 11 games and parts of three others due to an injury early in the season. Medica also drove in 23 runs while scoring 32.

After returning to full-time duty from that injury, Medica batted a scorching .391 while also notching all 14 of his extra-base hits over that span and driving in 21 runs from early March to the end of the season.

He also posted a 13-game hitting streak from March 30-April 21, with his batting average reaching a peak of .414 at one point of that streak. He also recorded 17 multi-hit games on the year, most notably a 5-for-5 performance at San Francisco on April 7 that helped garner him WCC Player of the Week and Collegiate Baseball National Honor Roll honors for the week of April 2-8.
