SANTA CLARA, Caif. - The 2007 season ended on a positive note for the Santa Clara baseball team Sunday afternoon at Stephen Schott Stadium, as the Broncos registered another 5-3 victory over the Sacramento State Hornets to complete the two-game sweep. With the win, the Broncos finish the year with a 27-29 overall record, and a 9-12 mark in West Coast Conference play that is good for a tie for fourth place with Loyola Marymount and San Francisco.
Tommy Medica went 2-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs Sunday with his first collegiate home run, a shot to left-center in the bottom of the fifth that gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead that they would not surrender the rest of the way.
Carl Bacon and Kevin Drever had two hits and an RBI in their final games as Broncos, while David Hoffmire scored a run in his final game. The trio, along with Kyle Hartz, were honored in a pregame ceremony as part of the Senior Day festivities.
Medica's blast turned around Sacramento State's 2-1 lead, and SCU starter Matt Wickswat, after giving up two runs in the second inning, cruised through the next five innings, before being lifted with one out and one on in the eighth. He gave up three runs, only two earned, on six hits while striking out six over seven and a third innings to get the win and finish the year 7-5.
The Broncos answered Montana Dye's two-run homer in the second with a run of their own, as Evan LeBlanc, who went 2-for-4 on the day, doubled to lead off the frame and two batters later scored on Drever's fielder's choice to make it 2-1.
Medica's blast in the fifth put SCU up 3-2, and in the seventh, Bacon's single through the right side plated Medica from second. The run came in handy as the Hornets got an unearned run after Patrick Cummins reached on an error to lead off the eighth, and came in from second on Blake Crosby's single off of reliever Alex Rivers.
Yet after SCU got an unearned run of their own to make it 5-3 in their half of the eighth, Steve Kalush, who had come on to get the final out of the Hornet half of the frame, held Sacramento State scoreless in the ninth for his fourth save of the year, and second in as many days.
