SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara baseball team was dealt a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the 14th-ranked University of San Diego Friday afternoon in their West Coast Conference opener. The setback puts the Broncos at 12-9 on the season, while the Toreros improved 19-8 overall.
The Toreros scored their lone run in the first inning. Kevin Muno reached on a bunt a then advanced to second on a bunt by Sean Nicol. The Torero shortstop then scored on a Victory Sanchez single up the middle.
Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest. SCU and USD each posted seven hits.
Brian Matusz (5-1) earned the win for San Diego throwing a complete game and striking out eight Broncos. Sophomore Nate Garcia (2-2) received his second loss of the season allowing the one run and striking out four Toreros.
The Broncos and Aggies continue action on Saturday, March 29 at Cunningham Stadium in San Diego First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
