Bronco Baseball Selected To Finish Third In WCC

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The West Coast Conference announced its 2008 baseball preseason coaches poll this week with the Broncos chosen to finish third in the league, it was announced Tuesday.

San Diego was chose to repeat as WCC champions. The Toreros received the maximum number of points, garnering all seven possible first place points and 49 overall points. Pepperdine was picked second with 42 overall points, while Santa Clara received the remaining first place vote and checked in at No. 3.

Coming off a 27-29 season in which the Broncos went 9-12 in conference play, SCU returns first team All-WCC and Freshman All-American catcher Tommy Medica, who led the conference with a .373 batting average. On the mound, the Broncos returns starters Matt Wickswat (7-5, 3.41), Nate Garcia (5-6, 5.06) and Donald Brandt (4-2, 4.12) in addition to closer Jeff Lombard, who saved 10 games in 2007.

The Broncos open the 2008 season on Friday, Feb. 22 against Utah Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara.
