SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara's freshman right-handed pitcher Thain Simon was named the West Coast Conference's Co-Pitcher of the week, it was announced Monday by the league office. Simon shares the honor with San Diego's Josh Romanski who tossed a no-hitter in a 12-0 win over Harvard during the week.
An El Dorado Hills native, Simon earned a win against then-No. 11 Cal and posted two saves against then-No. 14 San Diego in the opening week of conference play. For the week, he pitched 6.0 innings, striking out 10 of 18 batters face and allowing only one hit and no runs.
He registered his sixth win of the season after 2.0 innings of relief against then-No. 11 Cal in which he allowed no hits, no runs and struck out four Golden Bears. Simon earned his first collegiate save against then-No. 14 San Diego in game two of the weekend series. He tossed 3.0 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four Toreros. Simon's ninth inning against USD on Sunday gave the Broncos the 2-1 series win and his second save of the season.
On the season, Simon owns a 0.90 ERA and a 6-0 record. In 20.0 innings of work, he's struck out 27 batters and allowed only four runs.
Simon and the Broncos return to action on Wednesday, April 2 in the second meeting of the season with the Tigers of Pacific. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
