SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara Broncos baseball shortstop Jon Karcich was named to the 2007 Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball All-League Team, it was announced Thursday.
Karcich spent the summer playing third base for the Bethesda Big Train in Bethesda, Md. He hit an impressive .289, while belting three home runs. His on base percentage was equally noteworthy at .379, placing him second on the team. For his efforts, he was named the Big Train's Best Hitter by manager Sal Colangelo. Colangelo singled out Karcich for his "great approach at the plate and ability to hit the ball to all fields."
The Belmont, Calif., native saw action in 32 games this summer, starting in 31. He tallied 16 RBI, had 33 hits in 114 at bats and produced the team's second best slugging percentage, .439. The Big Train finished third in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League this summer with a 24-18 record.
