Fast Start Sends Pacific Past Men’s Basketball

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific's fast start was too much to overcome for Santa Clara men's basketball.

Jordan Bell, a transfer from LMU, had a double-double with season-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds, Daniss Jenkins scored 15 and Jeremiah Bailey added 13 points to lead the Tigers to a convincing 79-58 victory in Thursday's West Coast Conference tilt.

Pacific (4-1, 1-0) played nearly flawless offensively, shooting 48 percent from the floor, turning it over only four times and outscoring the Broncos 48 to 24 in the paint in its first game since Dec. 20 because of a pause in activities due to COVID-19.

Keshawn Justice had a game-high 19 points and DJ Mitchell added a season-high 12 for Santa Clara (7-3, 1-1) which surrendered the first 14 points of the game and never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Pierre Cockrell II tallied 12 points and five assists for the Tigers who led by as many as 22 in the second half and held the Broncos to only 6 of 24 from behind the 3-point line.

Santa Clara's leading-scorer Josip Vrankic (15.6 ppg) made his only field goal with less than 4 minutes remaining in the contest. He was 1-for-7 from the floor and had two points, but did lead the team with seven rebounds.

Christian Carlyle chipped in 10 points for Santa Clara which shot 35 percent from the field in the game and was never closer than 17 in the second half.

The Broncos cut the early deficit to 17-7 on a 3-pointer from Justice, who continued his hot shooting, but the Tigers scored the next seven, including five from Bell.

After a season-high 23 points in Saturday's 66-64 win at Saint Mary's, Justice connected on 6 of 10 field goals in the game.

The Pacific lead grew to 41-21 on a basket by Bell with 1:18 left in the half.

Bailey (10) and Bell (nine) combined for 19 of the team's 42 first-half points.

NOTES
• The Broncos have a 99-47 edge in a series that dates to 1905 and has won four of the last six
meetings. This is the eighth season the Tigers have been a member (for the second time)
of the West Coast Conference, with the Broncos leading 10-6 in that span. But the teams
have faced each other every season since 1994-95. The 146 games played are the fifth-most
among Santa Clara opponents. Santa Clara had won four of the previous six in Stockton.
• Pacific made six of its first seven field goals attempts in the game and Santa Clara missed its first seven to help the Tigers to a 14-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the game.
• Santa Clara entered the game allowing teams to shoot just 36.8 percent from the floor which ranked No. 8 in the nation. However, Pacific's 47.8-percent accuracy from the floor was the most by an opponent this season. USC shot 45.7 percent (32 of 70) on Dec. 29.
• One positive for the Broncos was shooting 14 of 18 (77.8 percent) from the free-throw line to match their season-best output from Saturday against Saint Mary's (also 14-for-18).
• Entering the game 1-for-9 on the season from behind the 3-point line, Christian Carlyle went 2 of 3.
• The second-leading rebounder in the WCC (8.3 per game), Josip Vrankic was held to a season-low two points but he led the team in boards (7) for the fifth time this season, including fourth in a row.
Jalen Williams was just 1 of 7 from the field, but drew five fouls and had career-highs in free throws made (7) and attempted (8). Williams scored nine points and had four rebounds.
• Pacific's Jeremiah Bailey is the younger brother of former Bronco Kyle Bailey (2001-05). Kyle Bailey is the 13th-leading scorer in Santa Clara history (1,571 points).
