San Francisco Pulls Away in Second Half to Down Men’s Basketball

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Khalil Shabazz scored a game-high 22 points and hot shooting in the second half lifted San Francisco to a 73-50 win over Santa Clara men's basketball on Thursday.

Leading by just two points at the half, San Francisco (10-7, 4-3) shot 20 of 31 from the field to outscore the Broncos 50 to 29 after intermission.

The Dons had three other players score in double figures. Dzmitry Ryuny had 15 points while Jamaree Bouyea added 13 and Josh Kunen tallied 10.

Taavi Jurkatamm pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for San Francisco which scored 27 points off a season-high 23 turnovers for the Broncos (8-4, 2-2) who were playing their West Coast Conference home opener.

Shabazz had 16 points in the second half when the Dons nailed 12 of their first 14 shots from the floor.

Jalen Williams scored a season-high tying 15 and DJ Mitchell tallied a season-best 13 points for Santa Clara which played without second-leading scorer, Keshawn Justice, who was not available due to a delay in results for COVID-19 testing.

San Francisco used a 17-2 run to take a 55-36 lead midway through the second half to put the game away. Shabazz and Bouyea had six points apiece during the flurry.

Shabazz (five) and Bouyea (four) also combined for nine of the team's 12 steals in the contest.

Mitchell's layup cut the lead to 55-41 with 7 minutes remaining but that was as close as the Broncos came for the remainder of the game.

The opening half consisted of momentum swings with two double-digit runs by each team. The Broncos used a 17-2 run to turn a seven-point deficit into a 21-13 lead, its biggest of the game. Williams led the charge, scoring eight points during the stretch.

However, San Francisco closed the half by scoring the final 10 points to take a 23-21 lead at intermission despite shooting just 25 percent from the floor.

The Dons came in averaging 11.2 3-pointers per game and connected on 10 of 30 in shooting 44 percent overall from the floor.

NOTES
• In a series that began in 1908, Santa Clara now leads, 116-112. San Francisco has won five of the last six meetings, including three of the last four on the road.
Keshawn Justice was a late scratch due to delay in results from COVID-19 testing. Justice had carried the offensive load the previous three games, averaging 17.0 points on 17 of 32 shooting from the floor (53.1 percent), including 8-for-15 on 3-pointers (53.3 percent).
DJ Mitchell started in place of Justice who was in the opening lineup the previous 34 games. Mitchell's 13 points marked his third double-digit scoring game of the year, including second in the last three games.
Josip Vrankic had 11 points to post his 10th double-digit scoring output of the season, most on the team.
• San Francisco's 12 steals were the most by an opponent this season (11 by San Diego on Jan. 17).
• The Broncos surrendered double-digit 3-point field goals for only the third time this season.
