No. 22 Men’s Soccer Picked to Finish Second; Two Named Preseason All-Conference

WCC Release

SAN MATEO, Calif. – The defending West Coast Conference Champions Santa Clara men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the conference, while a pair of Broncos, Damani Osei and Oladayo Thomas, were tabbed preseason All-WCC, the league office announced on Wednesday.

The No. 22 Broncos garnered 42 points in the poll, by a vote of the league's eight head coaches, just getting edged out by Portland's 43.  Both the Broncos and the Pilots got three first-place votes while Pacific (38 points) and LMU (34) had one first-place vote each to be picked third and fourth, respectively.

Thomas is a two-time All-conference selection, having been named first team in 2021 and an honorable mention in 2020.  The senior led the WCC in points (26), goals (nine) and shots (52) while finishing second in assists (eight) last fall.

Last fall, Osei played in all 18 games, starting in 17 of them.  He logged 1,618 minutes of action to lead the team and was a central figure in limiting the opposition to score just 0.94 goals per game to help the Broncos to a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  Back in 2019, Osei was named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.

Santa Clara plays two exhibition matches, both on the road, against Sacramento State (Aug. 16) and Cal Poly (Aug. 20) prior to the Aug. 25 regular season opener at home versus UNLV.
