Men’s Soccer Fight to a 2-all Draw Against Gonzaga on Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer scored in the 85th minute to go up 2-1 with a player down, but gave up the equalizer just 22 seconds later to scrape to a 2-all draw against Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match on Saturday night at Stevens Stadium.

Freshman Chase Weiner delivered his first career goal with five minutes remaining in the game on feeds from Eduardo Lopez Perez and Tyrone Kirunda to break a 1-all deadlock despite playing with only 10 players.

Caden Buckley picked up his second yellow card of the game in the 38th minute to give the Bulldogs (4-7-1, 0-1-1 WCC) a man advantage the rest of the way.

Trailing 2-1, Gonzaga struck quickly when Wylie Trujillo found the back of the net in the 86th minute to knot the game up at 2-all.

Along with being a player short, the Broncos (3-2-4, 0-0-2 WCC) dug themselves a hole in the opening minute of the game when they conceded an easy goal to Demitrius Kigeya off  a turnover.

The resilient Santa Clara side leveled the match in the 15th minute when Pierce Dyal pounced on a rebound save by Bulldogs goalkeeper Johan Garibay and found the back of the net from six yards out.  On the play Eduardo Lopez Perez sent in a long pass to the far post to the awaiting Jesse Anamoo whose header was on target but was punched out by Garibay before Dyal fired it into the goal.

For Garibay, it was one of four saves in the game, all coming in the first half.  Meanwhile Broncos goalkeeper Felix Schaefer had all his five saves in the second half.

NOTES

  • It was the third-straight draw for the Broncos.
  • Santa Clara is 18-4-8 in the last 30 games dating back to the 2020 season.
