No. 22 Men’s Soccer Upset By UC San Diego on Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer suffered their first regular season loss in nearly a year, falling to UC San Diego 2-0 in a nonconference tilt on Sunday night at Stevens Stadium.

UCSD (2-0) took advantage of their limited chances, converting on both shots that were on frame to upset the No. 22-ranked Broncos.  

In the 60th minute, the Tritons (2-0) took advantage of a Bronco turnover at midfield to score the first goal of the game.  Carter Jacobus took the turnover and delivered a pass from the top of the 18 to Max Carvalho on the left side and slotted a shot past a diving Broncos goalkeeper Felix Schaefer to the lower left corner to give UC San Diego a 1-0 advantage.

UCSD added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Mason Haubrich's shot from a steep angle on the right side snuck past Schaefer.

The Broncos (0-1-1) outshot the Tritons 11-5 but could not create any dangerous chances.  

Carvalho had a game-high four shots while Caden Buckley, Eduardo Lopez Perez and Oladayo Thomas led the Broncos with three shots each. 

NOTES

  • It was the first regular season loss for the Broncos since Sept. 6, 2021 when they fell to then No. 2 Georgetown, 1-0. 
  • Santa Clara is 15-3-5 in the last 23 games dating back to the 2020 season and has lost just twi in the last 16 contests (9-2-5).
