OJAI, Calif. - Santa Clara men's tennis attempted to mount a comeback in the opening round of the West Coast Conference Championships against Gonzaga but fell short, losing 4-2, to end the 2022 spring season.
With Santa Clara (10-12) trailing 3-1, the remaining three matches all went to a third set to give hope to the Broncos, who came back from a 3-0 deficit in the regular season finale against LMU last Sunday.
However, this time, a repeat of last weekend was not in the cards.
Nick Cmager closed the gap to 3-2 with his win over Pablo Gomez Galvan 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
James Bell looked to pull the Broncos even but lost to Arthus Bassetiere 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4 that clinched the match for the Bulldogs (18-5).
The match between Arthur Neuhaus and Oliver Andersson went unfinished all even at a set apiece and 5-5 in the third set when Gonzaga clinched the match.
The doubles action was similarly a close contest with each squad picking up a doubles win. The doubles point clincher came at No. 3 where Bassetiere and Theo McDonald downed Cmager and Bell 6-2
