TUCSON, Ariz. - Santa Clara beach volleyball split a pair of matches on the final day of The Cactus Classic on Saturday, dropping the first match to Colorado Mesa 3-2 before coming back with a 4-1 win over Boise State in the second match.
Match 1: Colorado Mesa 3 – Santa Clara 2
The match between Santa Clara (2-5) and Colorado Mesa (3-4) came down to the battle at No. 2 after the two teams split the first four games.
The No. 2 pairs of Julia Sangiacomo and Nicole Robison won the first set against Holly Schmidt and Macie Lachemann but the Colorado Mesa duo came back to win the final two sets, 15-21, 21-19, 15-13, to clinch the match for the Mavericks at 3-2.
Santa Clara got their two team points on victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
Alexia Inman and Michelle Shaffer downed Hahni Johnson and Savannah Spitzer 21-9, 21-16 at No. 1 to put SCU up 1-0.
With the Broncos trailing 2-1, the No. 3 tandem of Sophia Tulino and Jordan Bennett beat Jessa Megenhardt and Jada Hall in three sets, 21-16, 18-21, 15-8, to even the match at 2-all.
Match 2: Santa Clara 4 – Boise State 1
Santa Clara (3-5) dropped the first match to Boise State (3-5) but reeled off four-straight wins to take the match, 4-1.
The clincher came at No. 1 where Sangiacomo and Michelle Shaffer defeated Erin Martin and Yasmin Tan in three sets, 21-17, 15-21, 15-12.
All four Bronco wins came in three sets.
Tulino, Bennett and Shaffer each won two matches on the day.

Santa Clara play three dual matches on Saturday, March 12 in Santa Cruz against Cabrillo, West Valley and Feather River College.
