SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Santa Clara beach volleyball played three matches including two against ranked opponents, dropping them all. The Broncos fell to Boise State 4-1, No. 16 Arizona 3-2 and No. 10 Cal 5-0 on the sands of Cal Poly's Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
Match 1: Boise State 4 – Santa Clara 1
The final three matches went the distance going three sets but Boise State took two of them to defeat Santa Clara, 4-1.
Boise State (11-8) captured the first two matches in straight sets as Santa Clara (5-6) looked to mount a comeback.
At No. 5, Alexia Gallegos and Elena Radeff came back from a set down to push the match to the third set before falling to Katie Martin and Kaylee Mejia, 18-21, 21-12, 15-11, for the clincher.
SCU salvaged a team point when No. 1 pairs Julia Sangiacomo and Michelle Shaffer outlasted Rorianna Chartier and Sierra Land, 15-21, 21-11, 15-13.
Match 2: No. 16 Arizona 3 – Santa Clara 2
Santa Clara's No. 1 pairs Julia Sangiacomo and Michelle Shaffer was victorious for the second time on the day facing No. 16 Arizona's top tandem of Alex Parkhurst and Alana Rennie, 21-13, 21-17 to make it 2-1 on the team score but the Wildcats clinched the match at No. 2 to defeat the Broncos 3-2.
Sarah Blacker and Maja Kaiser downed Alexia Inman and Nicole Robison 22-20, 21-18 to clinch it for Arizona (7-3).
The Broncos (5-7) picked up their second team point when Alexia Gallegos and Jordan Bennett beat Kali Uhl and Hope Shannon 23-21, 21-18 at No. 5
Match 3: No. 10 Cal 5 – Santa Clara 0
No. 10 ranked Cal (14-4) displayed why they were a nationally ranked team by winning four of the five matches in straight sets.
Alexia Inman and Nicole Robison took the match to three sets at No. 2 before eventually losing to Ella Sears and Grace Paulson 21-19, 14-21, 15-12.
Ana Costa and Ainsley Radell handed the Broncos (5-8) tandem of Julia Sangiacomo and Michelle Shaffer their first loss of the day, 21-17, 21-14 at No. 1 that clinched it for the Bears.
