SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Santa Clara beach volleyball lost a pair of matches on the final day of the Mid-Season Invitational, falling to No. 16 Pepperdine 4-1 and to Saint Mary's 3-2.
Match 1: No. 16 ranked Pepperdine 4 – Santa Clara 1
Facing a nationally-ranked opponent for the second-straight day, this time against No. 16 Pepperdine, the Broncos (6-10, 1-2 WCC) were able to pick up a point but fell 4-1.
At No. 3 pairs, Casey Campbell and Elena Radeff defeated Peyton Lewis and Juju Quintero 21-18, 9-21, 15-13 but it was after the Waves (14-4) had already clinched the match having won the first four contests.
Simone Priebe and McKenna Thomas clinched it with a 21-18, 21-12 victory over Julia Sangiacomo and Sophia Tulino at No. 2.
Match 2: Saint Mary's 3 – Santa Clara 2
In the afternoon session, Santa Clara (6-11, 1-3) got off to a strong start when Michelle Shaffer and Alexia Inman handily defeated Jennifer Laird and Jasmin Suarez 21-12, 21-5 at flight one.
However, the Gaels (13-7, 7-2) strung together three-straight wins including the clincher by Hawley Harrer and Aeriel Sundt over Alexie Epstein and Claire Doud 21-14, 21-14 at No. 4.
The two schools will meet twice more in the regular season, on April 12 at Santa Clara and on April 20 at Saint Mary's.
