SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's tennis bounced back with a 4-1 win over UC Irvine on Sunday at the Degheri Tennis Center to pick up the first dual match win of the season, after falling to Nevada a day earlier.
The Broncos (1-1) reeled off four-straight singles wins capped off by JennaMarie Gordon's clincher on court two where she downed Jessica Tsukiji, 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 6-1.
UC Irvine (0-2) got on the scoreboard first, narrowly taking the doubles point. With the two teams winning one doubles match each, it came down to court two where the Anteaters' tandem of Ysabel Gonzalez Rico and Jenna Schlatter edged out the Broncos duo of Katherine Petty and Giulia Hayer 7-6 (7-5).
Trailing 1-0 on the team score, the Broncos put together a strong singles effort.
Hayer beat Shreya Pavani 6-2, 6-0 on court five to even the team score at 1-all. Petty followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emily Fowler on court four to put the Broncos up 2-1. Varya Zlotnik earned the third-straight Bronco point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Mia Totah.
Finley Kalinic and Velizara Fileva were close to clinching the match as they were ahead in each of their matches but Gordon beat them to the punch to secure Santa Clara's first win of the spring.
