SAN JOSE, Calif. - In a seesaw affair between Santa Clara women's tennis and San José State, freshman Velizara Fileva tipped the match in favor of the Broncos (2-3) with her three set victory over Irena Muradyan to clinch the 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
With the match knotted at 3-all, it came down to a court four battle between Fileva and Muradyan. After dropping the first set, Fileva came back to take the second. In the third and final set, Fileva narrowly edged out Muradyan in a tie-break to clinch the Broncos win, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Santa Clara started the match taking the double point when Jamie Schroer and Varya Zlotnik downed Rozalina Youseva and Jovana Babic 6-1 to clinch the point.
The Broncos and the Spartans (3-3) went back-and-forth in singles play with San José State taking the first singles match to even the team score at 1-all when Youseva beat Katherin Petty 6-4, 6-3 on court three. The next four singles were alternately won by the Broncos and the Spartans to even things at 3-all before Fileva's clincher.
