Volleyball Grinds Against Fresno State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Another scrappy contest Saturday went the way of the opponent, as the Santa Clara University volleyball team dropped its second match of its own Santa Clara Invitational to Fresno State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-19), at Leavey Center.

Like Friday's match against Oklahoma, the Broncos (3-5) led early and late in the first set, but the Bulldogs (4-4) eeked out a set victory by scoring three of the last four points to win, 25-23. Neither team had more than a one-point lead during the first half of set two, with eight lead changes in the first 25 points. Then, a 7-1 Fresno State run put it solidly in charge at 19-13. Four of the Bulldogs' final six points in the second set came on Santa Clara attack errors.

Santa Clara pushed hard again in the third set, never falling behind by more than two points and fighting to an 18-18 tie, looking to grab a set and the momentum. The Broncos hit .409 in the third set, but once again Fresno State pulled away with a run. This time it was a 7-1 stretch that closed out the set and the match. This run was all Bulldogs, with five kills and two service aces sealing the triumph.

Julia Sangiacomo led all players with 15 kills while hitting .385 and nearly had her second double-double in as many days with eight digs. Kat Georgiadis had a match-high 11 digs. Grace Doyle led Fresno State with 11 kills. Kasey Purry had four kills with no errors, hit .571 and collected four blocks.

The Santa Clara Invitational concludes Sunday with two matches. The Broncos face Tulane (4-4) at 10 a.m. Fresno State and Oklahoma face each other at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at SantaClaraBroncos.com. All live coverage links can be found on the Broncos' schedule page.
