Volleyball Lands Program-Record Seven on WCC All-Academic Teams

Full WCC Release

SAN MATEO, Calif. — The Santa Clara University volleyball team had a program-record seven student-athletes honored Tuesday with 2022 West Coast Conference All-Academic awards, including Julia Sangiacomo, who landed on the WCC All-Academic first team for the third time in her career.

Sangiacomo was part of the 17-member WCC All-Academic first team that honors the conference's best both on the court and in the classroom. Six other Broncos earned WCC All-Academic honorable mention accolades: Kat Georgiadis, Lexi Poppinga, Nani Spaar, Anna Stucchi, Sophia Tulino and Grace Wee.

Sangiacomo has been the epitome of "student-athlete" during her four years at Santa Clara. 2022 marks the third year in a row she's been named to both the all-WCC first team and the WCC All-Academic first team, joining Anna Cmaylo (2005-06, '08) as the only Broncos to ever accomplish the feat. She carried a 3.948 cumulative Grade Point Average this season as a biology major while also earning AVCA Pacific North All-Region Honorable Mention accolades. She led the WCC with 475 kills (seventh-most all-time in a single season at Santa Clara) and was second with 4.20 kills per set (ninth-best single-season mark at Santa Clara) while hitting .292. She moved into third all-time on the Santa Clara career kills list, totaling 1,528 at season's end.

Georgiadis played in all 32 matches as the Broncos' starting libero, earning all-WCC honorable mention accolades. Tuesday marked the second year in a row she earned WCC All-Academic honorable mention recognition to go along with her WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll Silver Honors in both 2020-21 and 2021-22. She led the WCC in total digs (469) and digs per set (4.08). She posted seven matches with 20 or more digs and 15 with at least 15 digs. The junior was third on the team with 26 service aces. She was tabbed the WCC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 10-16, 2022.

Poppinga was one of the Broncos' starting middle blockers, playing in 27 of 32 matches with 17 starts. She was third on the team with 39 total blocks. Poppinga had a season-high eight kills versus Oklahoma on Sept. 9. She turned in nine matches with multiple blocks, including a season-best five versus Troy on Aug. 27. She's appeared on the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll with Bronze Honors twice, in both 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Spaar had 101 kills and 76 digs as an important outside hitter reserve for the Broncos in 2022. She had double-digit kills in two matches on one day, logging 11 versus Troy and 10 against Georgia on Aug. 27. She posted eight matches with at least five digs and 11 matches with at least four kills. Spaar tallied a career-high four service aces against Troy on Aug. 27. Her other academic honors include WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2021, and WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll Silver Honors in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Anna Stucchi was part of the Broncos' middle blocker core in 2022, playing in 26 matches with 15 starts. She was fifth on the team with 35 total blocks. She also had 74 kills and 26 digs. She hit an outstanding .407 on 140 total attempts from the middle during the season. Stucchi added 16 service aces. She earned WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll Silver Honors in 2021-22.

Sophia Tulino was third on the team with 181 kills (2.15 per set) and fourth on the team with 25 service aces. She also had 99 digs and 30 total blocks. Tulino tallied double-digit kills in five matches and logged a double-double (12 kills, 12 digs) in the Broncos' five-set win over Portland on Oct. 13. Tuesday's 2022 WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention award goes along with earning WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention accolades in 2021. She also garnered WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll Bronze Honors in 2020-21 and 2021-22. In 2020, she was on the WCC All-Freshman Team and named all-WCC Honorable Mention.

Wee was an important defensive reserve who played in 30 of 32 matches and was one of only two seniors providing leadership on a young team in 2022. She finished fourth on the team with 103 digs (1.18 per set). She collected a season-high 11 digs against Pacific on Oct. 20 and had 10 matches with at least five digs. Wee also earned WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll Gold Honors in 2020-21, and Silver Honors in 2021-22.
