Volleyball Pushes No. 2 San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University volleyball team battled Thursday with the No. 2-ranked team in the country, but visiting San Diego brought too much fire power with it, eventually sweeping the Broncos, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-16) in a West Coast Conference match at Leavey Center.

The Broncos' (8-17, 4-9 WCC) best push against the No. 2 Toreros (21-1, 12-0 WCC) came in the second set. Santa Clara never trailed by more than three points and held two leads of their own in the set, at 6-5 and 12-11. The set was tied at 22-22, but USD put the set away with two kills and a block, taking a 2-0 match lead at a time.

Julia Sangiacomo led the Broncos with 12 kills. She added three blocks, two digs and a service ace. Layla Truitt hit a team-best .318 with eight kills while also collecting four digs and a block. Lia Okammor had a team-high four blocks, while Kat Georgiadis led all players with 15 digs.

San Diego hit .347 as a team while holding the Broncos to .130. Four of the Toreros' five attackers hit over .420, led by Leyla Blackwell's .571 percentage with nine kills and only one error. Katie Lukes led all players with 19 kills while hitting .394. She nearly had a double-double with eight digs and also chipped in two blocks.
