Volleyball Storms Back to Beat Bulldogs

SPOKANE, Wash. — There's no clock in volleyball. Which means – until the final point is scored… it's not over.

The Santa Clara University volleyball team was up against it Thursday on the road in Spokane, down two sets to none. But it takes three set victories to win the match, and the Broncos grabbed their opportunity in the third – never trailing – then dominated the fourth set before rolling into the fifth with all the momentum to earn the come-from-behind West Coast Conference victory, beating Gonzaga in five, 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-3), at the Martin Centre.

Youth and veteran experience both led the Broncos' offense Thursday. Freshman outside hitter Layla Truitt went over the 20 kills mark for the first time in her young career, leading all players with 25 kills while hitting .306. Senior outside Julia Sangiacomo posted the seventh 20-kills match of her season with 23. Sangiacomo also tied a career high with 18 digs to help anchor the Broncos' defense and log her fifth double-double of the year.

It was the first time Santa Clara (9-18, 5-10 WCC) had two players with 20 or more kills in the same match since Sept. 12, 2021, when Sangiacomo and Michelle Schaffer did it at Auburn. It was the first time the Broncos had come from behind down 2-0 in a match to win 3-2 since beating Portland in the same fashion on the road last season on Oct. 14, 2021.

Nive Tuileta set a new career high with 68 assists. It's the second time she's set a new career high this season and the second time she's had at least 60 assists in a match after collecting 60 versus Tulane at home on Sept. 11. Libero Kat Georgiadis had 22 digs, her sixth match this season with at least 20 digs.

Gonzaga (6-19, 2-12 WCC) was led by a 20-20 performance from Zoe Thiros, who put down 21 kills and collected 20 digs. Two other Bulldogs posted double-digit kills, while setter Keau Kamake'eaina had 45 assists and was one dig short of a double-double with nine.

The Broncos travel to face Portland at 1 p.m. Saturday. Fans can find all live coverage links on the Broncos' schedule page.
