LEXINGTON, Ky. — Santa Clara University volleyball senior outside hitter Julia Sangiacomo earned her third consecutive American Volleyball Coaches Association all-region honor Tuesday, landing on the Pacific North Region honorable mention list for 2022.
Sangiacomo was one of the best outside hitters in the West Coast Conference and also inserted her name in the Santa Clara record books in multiple places during the year. She concluded the regular season in November sitting No. 1 in the WCC in total kills, total points and points per set. She was second in the WCC in kills per set, and all of those accolades earned her first team all-WCC for the third time in her career.
Sangiacomo had eight 20-kill performances in 2022 and 17 matches in which she had 15 or more. She logged seven double-doubles while collecting 235 total digs and 71 total blocks. Her career-high 475 kills this season rank No. 7 all-time in a single season at Santa Clara, and her 4.20 kills per set are ninth-best all-time. She also moved into third all-time on the Santa Clara career kills list, totaling 1,528 to pass Nikki Hess (2013-16) who had 1,518.
Sangiacomo helped lead Santa Clara to a spot in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship – its 19th all-time postseason appearance and second during Sangiacomo's career. She and the Broncos defeated Portland State on its own home floor on Friday before falling to WCC foe Pacific in the second round Saturday. She led the Broncos in both matches with 17 and 13 kills, respectively.
Sangiacomo was named preseason all-WCC this year. She also earned a WCC Offensive Player of the Week award for the week of Nov. 7-13.
Sangiacomo's AVCA all-region recognition is the fourth in a row for the program, dating back to when Taylor Odom landed on the Pacific North all-region team before Sangiacomo's three consecutive awards.
