SAN MATEO — Santa Clara University volleyball's Kat Georgiadis was named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday for the week of Oct. 10-16 after she anchored the Broncos' defense in two WCC victories at Leavey Center.
The junior libero led all players in digs in both of the week's matches. She had a match-high 26 digs in the Broncos' five-set win over Portland on Thursday (5.2 per set), five short of her career high (31) she set earlier this season versus Tulane. She had the match high in digs again on Saturday in the Broncos' sweep of Gonzaga, collecting 18 (6.0 per set). For the week, she averaged 5.50 digs per set with 44 total digs. She also added nine assists and a service ace.
Georgiadis has 10 matches this season with at least 15 digs, and four with more than 20 digs. She's the WCC leader with 4.21 digs per set and 299 total digs. She currently has 799 career digs, and her career average of 3.43 digs per set ranks seventh all-time in the Santa Clara record book.
Pacific's Alexa Edwards was named this week's WCC Offensive Player of the Week alongside Georgiadis' defensive award. The two players will face each other later this week when Pacific comes to the South Bay at 6 p.m. Thursday, marking the end of the WCC's first half of play. The Broncos also host Saint Mary's at 1 p.m. Saturday to wrap up their four-match home stand.
