Broncos to Participate in Gael Classic this Weekend

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's tennis team concludes its fall season this weekend at the Gael Classic in Moraga, Calif. Three Broncos will participate in the three-day tournament Oct. 28-30.  The tournament consists players of Saint Mary's, Cal, Pacific, Fresno Pacific, Sonoma State, UC Irvine, UCLA and USF.

Senior Nico Vinel, junior Eugene Muchynski, sophomore Kyohhei Kamono, will represent the Broncos. All three are making their 2011-12 debuts at the Gael Classic.

Kamono is the No. 6 seed in singles and received a first-round bye. He will play the winner of Kiril Sinitsyn (Fresno Pacific University) v. Saad Benkirane (SMC).

Vinel begins singles play on Fri., Oct. 28 with an opening-round match against Ben Mirkin of Pacific.

Muchynski will also play in the first round. He battles eighth-seeded Germaine Babri from USF.

The Broncos have one doubles team entered.  Muchynski and Kamono will begin doubles play with a match against Garret Gooch and Vincent Paganeti from Sonoma State.

"We will see how [Muchynski and Kamono] do," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "They didn't play together much last year so we are trying to see if that can be a combination we can use this year."

The goal for this weekend is the same goal the Broncos have going into every tournament: win.

"We have high expectations," said Mills. "When we go into a tournament we expect to win it. The Fall has been okay, but we still have several more weeks to get better and we are going to do that."

When the Broncos play this weekend it will be on a familiar surface at a familiar WCC opponent's complex. This weekend will also serve as a way to test the courts for WCC dual matches in the spring.

"It helps actually," Mills. "You get to see how their courts are. We struggled their last year that's for sure. I think it will be good for our guys to get on [Saint Mary's] courts and play several matches. Hopefully that will help when we go back in the spring."
