PALO ALTO, Calif. – After defeating No. 19 Texas for the school's first-ever win in the men's tennis NCAA Tournament on Saturday, No. 39 Santa Clara could not overcome No. 11 Stanford and fell 4-1 in the Round of 32 in Palo Alto, Calif. on Sunday afternoon.  The Bronco men finished the season at 22-6, including 7-1 in West Coast Conference play.

In the doubles portion, Santa Clara battled hard, but were unable to secure the doubles point after playing for match point a few times. John Lamble and Ilya Osintsev continued to prove that the young tandem is the Broncos' most dangerous. The tandem picked up second-straight win by downing Stanford's No. 1 duo 8-6. After the Broncos fell in the No. 2 spot, seniors Maxime Armengaud and Nicolas Vinel fought to an all-important tie-break. The Cardinal were able to edge the Broncos and secured the doubles point. 

"It was a huge effort. We just took the No. 10-11 team in the country to the max they could take on their home court. We just had so many chances in doubles and we just could not pull it off. It was a huge deal because we had some match points in a couple matches and we just couldn't pull out the doubles point," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills, who was the 2012 WCC Coach of the Year.  "We battled in singles and John had a great win No. 2 singles. We fought as hard as we could. We played them really close. Stanford was ready to play and so we were. Our assistants did a great job for us this year and we were ready."

"It was tough, Stanford is a really good team. We fought our hardest and we tried everything, we gave everything we had and we came up short.  I am really proud of our guys because we tried so hard," said senior Kyle Dandan, who was with the team for four years, including his freshman year when the Broncos were 4-16.  What are your emotions after a tough match like this? "I was already crying already. I am having mixed emotions. I knew we had a shot at them, but I am really happy to end my career in the NCAAs. The coaches have been so good and it's been amazing. It's been so memorable and the honor has been all mine."

With a 1-0 lead, Stanford tallied its second point when No. 36 Bradley Klahn beat Kyle Dandan 6-3, 7-5.

However, the Broncos continued to battle. Lamble picked up an impressive victory over a fellow ranked singles player. Lamble, ranked No. 123, downed No. 29 Ryan Thacher 7-5, 6-3. Lamble, who garnered Second Team All-WCC honors as a singles player, finished the year with the most wins on the team (25).

"I had trouble with his serve in the beginning, but I got one break when I was down and I figured out how to return against him and that gave me a lot of confidence and energy and I went from there," said Lamble.

After Lamble picked up a point, Stanford was able to string together two wins to end the dual match. Despite a valiant effort, Stanford's John Morrisey defeated junior Tom Pham in three-sets.
