SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After a thrilling upset victory over No. 19 San Diego April 15, the Santa Clara men's tennis team jumped two spots into the nation's top-30 teams. In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings on Apr. 17, the Broncos moved up to No. 30. Additionally, senior Kyle Dandan and the doubles pair of Ilya Osintsev and John Lamble also picked up accolades from the ITA.
The 19-4 Santa Clara squad improved to 4-1 in West Coast Conference play with two WCC wins last weekend. The Broncos dropped local rival Saint Mary's on Sat., Apr. 13 before ousting then-No. 19 San Diego. San Clara's current ranking of No. 30 is just one-shy of the school's all-time best achieved earlier this season.
In singles, Kyle Dandan improved on an outstanding senior campaign by defeating an opponent in the ITA's top-40 singles player. The senior from the Philippines was ranked No. 78 in last week's poll and with his victory over No. 36 Nikola Bubnic of USD, he moved to No. 68. The No. 68 mark is the highest ranking for a singles player in school history.
The tandem of Osintsev and Lamble were ranked in doubles rankings for the second-straight ranking. This week the two Broncos were slotted as the No. 84 duo. The two underclassmen are the reigning WCC Doubles Players of the Month and have played as the Broncos primary No. 1 doubles team this season.
The Broncos travel to Portland and Gonzaga this weekend.
