Santa Clara Falls To Princeton 9-6 In First Game Of Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, New Jersey - No. 14 Santa Clara (0-3) fell to No. 17 Princeton (1-0) Fri., Sept. 9 by a score of 9-6. The match was Santa Clara's first of the Princeton Invitational. The game was nationally televised on ESPNU.

Santa Clara started slowly on the offensive end in the first half and trailed the Tigers 3-1 going into halftime.

In the second half, however, the Broncos turned things around and were able to score three goals in the third quarter and two in the fourth. Marcus Akerland led the charge with two goals on the day. Tucker Carlson, David Guibord, Matt Kochalko and Jack Penner each added one goal apiece. Michael Wishart continued his strong play, tallying 11 saves of his own.

"We need to be a lot more aggressive on the counter attack," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Not just getting the offense up quickly but be more aggressive taking shots. We're transitioning from last year to this year right now and we need some players to step up. We're sort of figuring the transition out as we go. We started to put it together a little in the second half and that's why we were more successful."

The Broncos return to the pool tomorrow for a pair of games. First they will play No. 19 St. Francis (N.Y.) at 6 a.m. Pacific. At 4 p.m. Pacific Santa Clara will take on Brown. The tournament will continue through Sun., Sept. 11.
