PRINCETON, New Jersey - Santa Clara (4-3) topped MIT by a score of 8-6 and Fordham 13-8 to finish the Princeton Tournament on Sun., Sept. 11. After losing the opener against the host team Princeton, the Broncos won four straight games to end their weekend on a high note.
Senior goalie Michael Wishart continued his spectacular weekend in the first game of the day by recording 11 blocks and two assists against MIT. Jack Penner forced three kick outs and Theo Nasser added two more. Patrick Weiss led the Broncos' offensive charge with three goals. Five other Broncos added one goal each.
"I thought the morning game was a little rough for us because it was the third game of the weekend," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "We didn't come out as strong as we could have. I thought we had a lot of missed opportunities to score and extend our lead. In the end, I'm happy that we got the win."
In the afternoon game against Fordham several Santa Clara players had a strong game. Marcus Akerland, Matt Kochalko, Nasser, Kyle Surber and Weiss scored two goals each. James Case added four assists and Penner had three of his own. In addition to his two goals, Surber recorded two kick outs. Wishart had five saves and an assist and back-up goalie John Nash saw action while recording two saves.
"I thought we did a better job in the afternoon," said Wilbur. "It was a close game for a long time but we were able to finish our scoring opportunities. I thought it was a good way to finish off the weekend."
The Broncos will return to California and play three games next weekend as part of the NorCal Tournament hosted by Pacific. Santa Clara will play the host Tigers on Sat., Sept. 17 at 12 noon.
