No. 18 Santa Clara Upsets No. 10 UC Davis 9-6

DAVIS, Calif. - Santa Clara men's water polo (11-10; 5-3 WWPA) topped to No. 10 UC Davis on Sunday by a score of 9-6. This was second meeting between the WWPA rivals this season. On Sept. 18 at the NorCal Tournament the Aggies topped Santa Clara 10-7.

"I thought that this was our best game of the season and the team put together its best four quarters. This was also the biggest win for us so far this season," said Bronco head coach Keith Wilbur. "We had a game plan and the players stuck to it. They played great defense with Wishart being the backbone. A lot of players contributed on offense to help us get this win."

The Broncos got out to a quick start in the first quarter and led 3-0 at the first intermission. On offense they were led by Marcus Akerland, Theo Nasser and Brett Zylstra who each had two goals. David Guibord, Jimmy Moore and James Case each added a goal apiece to account for the nine Santa Clara goals. Daley Meistrell added three assists while Nasser drew three kick-outs and three penalty shots.

The Santa Clara defense was led by senior goalkeeper Michael Wishart who continued his stellar season. He recorded 13 saves on the day to inch closer to the all-time Bronco record. Two of the 13 saves came on penalty shots and he added two steals. Meistrell had four steals and Patrick Weiss played a great game containing Davis' two-meter set.

Santa Clara will host No. 3 UCLA at noon on Sun., Oct. 26 for their only game of the week. The following weekend will see the Broncos host their annual Rodeo Tournament.
