Santa Clara Wraps-Up Rodeo Tournament With Two More Wins; Wishart Sets A Record

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fifteenth ranked Santa Clara men's water polo (15-12; 6-3 WWPA) wrapped up the Rodeo Tournament with a pair of wins against Bucknell and Harvard. The Broncos finished the tournament with a 4-1 record. Michael Wishart set the all-time Santa Clara record for goalkeeper blocks in the second game of the day.

"Obviously we had a rough start to the tournament on Friday but we played two good, close games on Saturday and today we played even better," said Bronco head coach Keith Wilbur. "I thought we played well in all facets of the game today and it was a good weekend in terms of how we developed as a team."

The Broncos won their first game of the day against Bucknell by a score of 13-6. The offense was led by David Guibord who scored a personal season-high three goals. His goals put the game out of reach and sealed the victory for the Broncos. Marcus Akerland, Tucker Carlson and Mark Davis each had two goals while Theo Nasser, Jimmy Moore, James Case and Patrick Weiss added one goal apiece. Akerland added three assists, one steal and one kick out drawn and Brett Zylstra had one kick out drawn and two five-meter penalties drawn. Wishart added 14 blocks to get within three of the all-time Santa Clara record and added three assists.

In game two against Harvard, Case led the way with three goals. Meistrell, Akerland and Weiss had two goals each while Davis, Jimmy Moore, Matt Kochalko and C.J. D'Arienzo had one goal apiece. Meistrell also had two assists and two kick outs drawn while Nasser had three kick outs drawn. Case and Davis had two assists each while Weiss recorded five steals. Wishart recorded six saves in the first half while John Nash and Matt Pritchett had four blocks each in the third and fourth quarter respectively.

With his 20 blocks on the day, Wishart became the Santa Clara all-time blocks leader with 1,066. He surpassed Peter Moore's 1,063 in the game against Harvard with his fourth block of that game.

The Broncos return to the pool on Sun., Oct. 30 at noon to host the University of the Pacific at Santa Clara. Sat., Oct. 29 will be the Alumni Game at noon hosted at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
