DAVIS, Calif. - Fifteenth ranked Santa Clara University men's water polo (8-5) won both of its games on Sat., Sept. 24 at the first day of the Aggie Shootout hosted by UC Davis. The Broncos defeated Redlands 11-5 and Occidental 14-8.
In game one against Redlands, Santa Clara took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter and never looked back, in the end winning by a score of 11-5. Seven different Broncos scored at least one goal while Marcus Akerland, Tucker Carlson and Kyle Surber had two goals. Daley Meistrell, David Guibord, Patrick Weiss and Mark Davis each added one goal apiece. Michael Wishart added six saves to continue his season-long strong play in net.
Against Occidental in the afternoon the Broncos had another strong first quarter by outscoring Occidental 5-2. Santa Clara made it 8-2 at the half and ultimately won the game by a score of 14-8. Wishart recorded seven more blocks in the second game to help lead the Bronco defense. Akerland and Weiss scored two goals each and Theo Nasser, Brett Zylstra, James Case, Meistrell, Surber and Davis added single goals.
Santa Clara looks to use the two wins to propel itself into Sunday's action against La Verne and No. 3 Cal. The game with La Verne will be at 9:10 a.m. and the game against Cal will be at 3 p.m.
