Broncos Advance To WWPA Semi-Finals With 10-6 Win

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After a first-round bye in the Western Water Polo Association Championships, No. 14 Santa Clara men's water polo (17-16; 8-5 WWPA) topped Pomona-Pitzer by a score of 10-6. The win advances the Broncos to the semi-finals where they will play second-seeded UC San Diego at 3 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 19. The two teams played previously in 2011 on Nov. 4 in San Diego. The Tritons came away with a 14-7 victory.

Late in the third quarter Santa Clara was behind by a score of 5-4 before it scored four goals in the last few minutes of the period and the first minutes of the fourth quarter. In all, the Broncos outscored Pomona-Pitzer 6-1 in the last 11 minutes of the game.

Santa Clara was led on offense by Daley Meistrell who had three goals. James Case, Kyle Surber and Marcus Akerland had two goals each and Matt Kochalko added one to round out the scoring. Senior goalkeeper Michael Wishart recorded five blocks.
