Seven Men's Water Polo Player's Honored For Academic Success

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Continuing a tradition of academic excellence, seven Santa Clara men's water polo players were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) 2011 Academic All-American teams. Click here to view the full list.

The seven Broncos named were seniors Michael Wishart and Brett Zylstra, juniors C.J. D'Arienzo and John Nash, redshirt-sophomore Theo Nasser, redshirt-freshman Casidhe McClone and freshman Mark Davis. McClone, D'Arienzo, Nash, Wishart and Zylstra were recognized as "outstanding" for having a GPA between 3.71 and 4.00 while Nasser and Davis were "excellent" with GPAs between 3.41 and 3.70. All were first team selections.

"I am proud that we have seven players from our men's team who were named ACWPC Academic All-Americans," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. " Last quarter was our highest GPA as a team in the past four years and these seven guys lead the way for our team. They are hard workers in the pool and the classroom and they really get what it means to be a student-athlete."

Wishart amassed 316 blocks, 21 steals and 23 assists. He broke Peter Moore's '05 Bronco career mark for blocks on Oct. 23 in a 13-4 win over Harvard as part of the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament.

Zylstra made 17 starts and appeared in 32 games while scoring 15 goals and adding 22 assists with 23 steals. He placed second on the team with 10 field blocks.

D'Arienzo played in all 35 games in 2011 for the Broncos. A junior-college transfer from West Valley in his first year with Santa Clara, he scored four goals with six assists and 11 steals. He also drew four kick-outs and had five field blocks.

Nash made one start and played in 12 games overall. He picked up his first career win when he came in to replace Wishart against Cal Baptist with the score tied 10-10. He held Cal Baptist scoreless for the last four minutes of the game.

Nasser appeared in all 35 games while making 17 starts and tied for the team-lead with 41 goals scored. He also led the team with 53 kick-outs drawn while adding eight assists and 18 steals.

McClone scored one goal and had one assist, three steals, one field block and one kick-out drawn in 12 games.

Davis appeared in all 35 Santa Clara games in 2011. He collected 15 goals, 12 assists, 19 steals, 11 field blocks and nine kick-out drawn.
