No. 15 Santa Clara Men's Water Polo Wins Two On Second Day Of The Rodeo Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On the second day of the Rodeo Tournament, the No. 15 Santa Clara men's water polo team (13-12; 5-4 WWPA) defeated Western Water Polo Association-rival Air Force 11-6 and Cal Baptist 11-10.

"We had a tough game last night but the guys responded the way I hoped they would today," said Bronco head coach Keith Wilbur. "They came out with a real focus on playing hard, playing good defense and pushing the counterattack. They were a lot more focused today and came out and played good ball."

In the first game Theo Nasser scored five goals to lead the Bronco offense. Daley Meistrell, Brett Zylstra, Matt Kochalko, Jimmy Moore, James Case and Tucker Carlson added one goal each to round out the Santa Clara scoring. Case added four assists while Marcus Akerland had three steals. Senior goalkeeper Michael Wishart had 10 blocks on the game.

The second game saw Akerland and Patrick Weiss each score three goals a piece while Zylstra and Case added two of their own. Meistrell scored one goal to give the Broncos 11 for the game. Akerland added two assists and two steals while Weiss added two steals, an assist and a kick out drawn. Wishart collected four blocks but had to leave them game when his contact lens came out. Junior John Nash replaced him for the last four minutes with the scored tied 10-10. Nash made four blocks to keep Cal Baptist scoreless after the Broncos went ahead 11-10. With his 14 blocks on the day, Wishart sits only 17 behind Peter Moore for the all-time Santa Clara record.

Santa Clara wraps up the weekend with two more games on Sun., Oct. 23. The first game will be at 9:20 a.m. vs. Bucknell and the second game will be at 2:30 p.m. vs. Harvard.
