Santa Clara Splits With Air Force And Pomona-Pitzer

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Santa Clara University men's water polo (10-8; 4-2 WWPA) split two games at the SoCal Invitational on Sunday. The Broncos lost to Air Force by a score of 12-10 and beat Pomona-Pitzer 14-5.

In the first game against Air Force James Case scored three goals to lead the Bronco offense while Theo Nasser added two of his own. Christopher D'Arienzo, Daley Meistrell, Marcus Akerland, Patrick Weiss and Kyle Surber scored one goal a piece to round out the Santa Clara scoring. Michael Wishart crept closer to the Santa Clara all-time saves record by picking up 9 for the game.

Despite the strong offensive output the Broncos couldn't stop Cruz Smithson who had four goals and Andrew Hamilton who score three times.

Against Pomona-Pitzer the Broncos were able to put up 14 goals. Weiss and Meistrell each scored three goals and Brett Zylstra and Nasser had two goals apiece. D'Arienzo, Case, Surber and Mark Davis rounded out the scoring with one goal each. Wishart recorded 10 blocks through the first three quarters and John Nash recorded two in the fourth quarter.

The Broncos will next play their home-opener on Sat., Oct. 8 against Pepperdine at 12 p.m. On Sun., Oct 9 Santa Clara will travel to Davis, Calif. to take on the UC Davis Aggies. Santa Clara and Davis played on Sept. 18 and ended in a 10-7 Aggie win.
