Broncos Fall in Day 2 Doubleheader to End Four-Game Series with BYU

Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara softball dropped the second doubleheader in a row to visiting BYU. Game scores were 3-0 and 11-0 in favor of the Cougars. Santa Clara drops to 6-39, 3-13 in PCSC. They hit the road for a four-game series at Utah Valley on April 27 and 28, with first pitch at 11 a.m. PT.

Game one saw the two teams remain knotted at 0-0 until BYU used a two-run fourth to take the lead. With one on, Katie Manuma reached on a fielder's choice, and advanced Gordy Bravo to second. Alexandra Shamo doubled, bringing home Bravo and moving Manuma to third. Madisen Robb followed with a single, plating Manuma. With the bases loaded, Broncos shortstop Casandra Padilla turned Coco Tauali'i's grounder into a double play, tagging Robb and gunning down Tauali'i at first.

BYU added a third run in the top of the fifth, picking up where they left off in the batting order. Anna Hudson led off with a double but was lifted for Lacey Millett as a pinch runner. Millett was brought home on a JC Clayton single to center field.

Junior Stephanie Fisher notched her 11th multi-hit game of 2013, and Breezy Brenard recorded one hit.

Ciara Gonzales started for the Broncos, working through six innings. She allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out three. Jessica Turner pitched the final inning for Santa Clara, striking out one.

BYU opened game two pouring on seven runs with seven hits in the top of the first. The Cougars added three runs in the top of the third, extending the lead to 10-0.

JC Clayton and Bailie Hicken led the way for the Cougars with three hits.

Turner started for the Broncos, leaving after retiring two in the first. Turner allowed seven runs on five hits, with two walks. Jaymi Bautista-Geiger came on in relief, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out one. Briana Rios entered midway through the fourth, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing two runs on one hit.

Brenard notched the only hit of the game for Santa Clara. She was the only player in the doubleheader for Santa Clara to record a hit in both games.
