Checking in with Alumni Erika Barnes '07

Santa Clara, Calif. - Entering the spring dual season her senior year, Erika Barnes '07 (EB) was already standing as the 10th all-time doubles victories (45) record holder in Santa Clara women's tennis program history. By the end of the season, she and partner Casey Knutson tacked on 13 more wins, to bring Barnes' career record to 58, which is fourth place in school history. SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) checked in recently with the former Bronco star:

SCB: What is your favorite Bronco team memory?

EB: "I have too many amazing memories to choose from. Some of my favorites would be when we became nationally ranked after defeating Cal Poly SLO, throwing my racket in relief and joy when we beat USF in a close match, and defeating nationally ranked Fresno State with my partner Casey Knutson."

SCB: And what about off the court?

EB: "I loved road tripping with the team. It made for fun conversation and team bonding. Oh and of course, the prank calls. (laughing) Am I allowed to share that ?

SCB: How have the lessons you learned on the court at Santa Clara served you after graduation?

EB: "I use my many court lessons in everyday life (multi-tasking, staying driven, persevering), but I think the most important of these is that you only have control of yourself. You can't control what others may do or say. This comes in handy on and off the court."

SCB: Do you still meet up with teammates?

EB: "Yes! I love seeing the girls in the area and visiting those who are not close. It is fun to see what everyone is up to. I miss seeing them every day and being a part of such an integrated team of friends."

SCB: How often do you make it back to campus?

EB: "Since I live so close to campus I like to come back to attend tennis matches as well as basketball games, soccer games and alumni events."

SCB: Where are you working?

EB: I work at the online personalized stationary company, TinyPrints.com, in the integrated brand marketing department.

Barnes left her name in the record books when she walked off the Degheri Tennis Courts in 2007 for the last time as a player, but more importantly, she also walked off with many rich memories, friendships and values that last a lifetime.
