The Santa Clara women's tennis team will travel to Santa Barbara this week to take on UC Santa Barbara Friday January 28th at 1:30 p.m. and Northern Arizona University Saturday January 29th at 11:00 a.m. The Broncos are 2-0 on the season after defeating CSU Bakersfield and UC Santa Cruz last week.
In last season's matchup versus the Gauchos, both teams won three singles matches, but the Broncos won the doubles point and went on to win the match 4-3. As the SCU squad prepares to face the Gauchos again in their first road trip of the spring 2011 season, head coach Ben Cabell believes experience is crucial. "All the starters have played on the road and in front of crowds so we know what to expect."
After last season's competitive face-off, Cabell believes this week's match against the Gauchos will be equally exciting. "Santa Barbara usually has good crowds, which always makes it harder to excel. They will also be an improved team much like us, so it will be a tough match."
NAU and the Broncos haven't faced off since the 2008-09 season, but the Lumberjacks will be looking to bounce back from a recent loss to No. 49 Arizona. "We don't know their line up yet, but we know they will be tough," said Cabell. "We've beaten some of their players in the fall, so if we play well we should be successful."
