Broncos Down CSUB and UCSC in Home Opener Victories

Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team opened up its spring dual campaign with two victories by beating CSU Bakersfield, 7-0 and UC Santa Cruz, 7-0. The Broncos are 2-0 going in to the upcoming match vs. UC Santa Barbara Friday January 28th.

With the first serve against CSUB at 9:00 a.m. the Bronco women's tennis team began its spring 2011 campaign. "This was the first match of the year everyone was a little nervous, but the girls handled it well," said head coach Ben Cabell. "Bakersfield played some tough doubles against us, and even though we had to work through some jitters we did really well. We were happy with the results."

Against CSUB, Kimmi Cox won a hard fought match in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 10-4, and at the number two position Kelly Lamble gave herself a birthday present with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Sophomores Alex Zaniewski and Maggie McGeorge posted singles wins at the number three and five positions, and junior Captain Kacie Wagner opened up her first spring match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

It was the freshmen however, that galvanized the squad to its first triumphs. Freshmen Katie Le and Carolina O'Haren both earned the game balls for their play at their respective positions. Le defeated a CSUB opponent at the number one singles position 6-0, 6-1, and then defeated the Banana Slugs' number one doubles' duo with partner Jessica Agra 8-4.

O'Haren tacked on wins against UCSC at the number six singles position 6-1, 6-4, and defeated Santa Cruz's number three doubles' pair with partner Alex Zaniewski 9-7. "Everyone did great but we singled out the freshmen for stepping in and getting some big wins today," said Cabell. The rest of the squad followed suit, and posted impressive scores against the No. 29 (Div. III) Banana Slugs.

The Broncos will travel to Santa Barbara this coming Friday the 28th to take on the Gauchos in a dual match up, and starting at 1:30 p.m. Bronco fans can listen to a live broadcast. Click here for to hear the broadcast.
