SCU Women's Tennis: 2010-11 Season In Review

SCU Women's Tennis: 2010-11 Season In Review

The 2010-11 Bronco squad finished fourth in WCC with a 17-6 overall record, garnering the highest national ranking in program history, No. 57, on April 19 and finishing the season ranked No. 68. Five Broncos received post-season WCC Honors, and as a squad, posted the highest ever winning percentage (.739).

This record breaking season was sprinkled with outstanding individual and team performances. Down 5-0 in a third set match, with the deciding team singles point on the line, Jessica Agra came back to defeat her UCSB opponent 7-5. "It was the most outstanding individual comeback I have ever seen," said head coach Ben Cabell. "Jess really dug down deep that match."

No. 110 Katie Le, received the highest individual ranking in program history, and became the second Bronco ever to collect the honor of Freshman of the Year. Le defeated seven players hailing from nationally ranked teams, going 25-6 overall at the No. 1 singles spot. Le and doubles partner, Jessica Agra went 17-4 during the dual season, and tallied two wins over individually nationally ranked opponents, earning a No. 74 national ranking.

Two-year team captain, Kacie Wagner, and the Broncos No. 2 spot anchor, Kelly Lamble, both received honorable mention for their singles play. In doubles, Lamble and partner Maggie McGeorge along with No. 74 ranked duo, Le and Jessica Agra, received Second Team honors.

As a team, for the first time in program history, the Bronco squad upset a current nationally ranked team in No. 56 UC Davis. The squad tallied five total swept matches by not allowing their opponents to earn a team point. Off the court, the Broncos found success as well and maintained a collective 3.49 GPA, "we stress as a team balancing academics and athletics," said head coach Ben Cabell. "It's an important part of what we do here at Santa Clara. Our girls are not only great tennis players but incredible students. They work really hard on the court and in the classroom."

Perhaps most notable about the squad's break out season is the youth. The Broncos shattered the record books with out any seniors listed on their roster. The entire team is set to return next season, and the Broncos seemed poised to build upon their success. "We're really excited that our entire team is coming back," said Cabell. "This is the best team we've ever had here at Santa Clara, and we are excited to have another year to get even better."
