Santa Clara, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's tennis team is taking the first week of this spring quarter to prepare for Saturday's matchup against defending WCC Champions, St. Mary's College. The Broncos are 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the WCC.
St. Mary's is 7-7 overall and 3-1 in WCC after falling 4-3 at Pepperdine on March 27. Last year's WCC freshman of the year, SMC's Catherine Isip, has beaten seven nationally ranked singles opponents and is undefeated in league at the No. 2 singles position.
"This is a really big match for us, and playing SMC has turned in to a rivalry," said head coach Ben Cabell. "Playing the defending conference champions on their home courts guarantees a tough match, but we are really looking forward to the challenge. We like playing teams that are this strong."
During fall pre-season play, SCU's freshman Katie Le and SMC's Isip faced off. Le was victorious during that outing and hopes to grab her 15th singles victory this weekend. The team is looking to pick up its fourth WCC victory after its recent 7-0 loss to University of San Diego.
"We are using the match against San Diego as motivation to improve against nationally ranked teams. This is how we get better, by playing teams of this caliber."
The Broncos will be back at home on Tuesday April 5, facing off against San Jose State at 2:00 p.m.
Stay tuned in for updates.
Go Broncos!
