Broncos Set to Round Up Dual Season

Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team aims to cap off its 2011 dual season with two wins this weekend. The Broncos play at UC Davis on Saturday and at home Sunday versus Bay Area rival, University of San Francisco. The Broncos currently rank third in the WCC, following Pepperdine and St. Mary's respectively, with a 14-4 overall record and 4-2 WCC record.

Santa Clara has regained momentum after losses at San Diego and St. Mary's, with convincing victories over San Jose State (6-1) and Portland (7-0). Katie Le regained her No. 115 individual national ranking, and along with doubles partner, Jessica Agra, earned the No. 74 national ranking after defeating nationally ranked squads from USD (6-5) and SMC (8-3).

The No. 65 Aggies compete in the Big West Conference and have earned an impressive 16-4 overall record, including a 10-0 winning streak midway through the season. In its most recent matches the Davis team defeated UC Santa Barbara (5-2) and swept UC Riverside (7-0). The team is set to take on No. 42 Long Beach State on Friday prior to the face off with Santa Clara.

"UC Davis is a really important match for our ranking," said head coach Ben Cabell. "They are a very good team. I think it is going to be really close either way since we've both had similar results throughout the year. We're looking forward to playing two tough matches over the weekend to get us ready for the conference tournament."

The USF Dons (6th in WCC) were recently down in doubles action to Northern Arizona, but then posted four straight singles victories to earn the 4-3 win. During its last home match of the spring season, the Dons defeated University of Portland 6-1, winning six singles matches while conceding the doubles point. The team travels to San Jose State today in their last match prior to the other South Bay matchup with Santa Clara.

"USF is always a competitive match," said Cabell. "It is our final home match of the year, and obviously we want to finish with a win."

"USF is a good Bay Area team and we always want to beat them," said sophomore Kelly Lamble. "We already beat them in a close 4-3 match earlier in the season, so this second contest is a chance to show how we've improved over the season and solidify our WCC standing going into the conference championship."

Come out to the courts Sunday at 12:00 noon. Anyone wearing Ruff Rider or Bronco gear can enjoy free pizza while cheering on the Broncos!
